Roulette

Roulette was invented in Europe in the 17th century, making it the oldest casino game still being played. For centuries casino enthusiasts around the world were been enthralled with roulette.

The Roulette wheel is divided into 37 on the European Wheel and 38 on the American wheel (American casinos usually have a double-zero as well as a zero). The other numbers are 1-36.

Each pocket of the wheel is colored red or black, starting with the red for one, black for two, and so on. The zero and the double-zero pockets are green (nullifying a general bet on red or black).

A ball is spun in a clockwise direction around the rim of the wheel, while the wheel itself spins counter-clockwise. The basic object of the game is to bet on the number where the ball will land when it stops moving.

On the betting table, numbers that match those on the wheel are arranged in 3 columns of 12 numbers. In addition to these inside bets, there are numerous other outside bets on the table. But there are many variations, even on the inside bets. The following are typical bets and typical odds.

Inside Bets

Straight Up
Bet on any number on the table (1-36, zero or double-zero) by placing a chip on it. Winning bets are usually paid 35 to 1.

Split (2 Number Bet)
Place your bet on two adjacent numbers by placing a chip on the line between them. If the ball lands on either, you win. This typically pays 17 to 1.

Row Bet or Street Bet (3 Number Bet)
Make your bet on any three numbers in a row across the table by placing a chip on the outer line of that row. If the ball lands on any of the three numbers, you win, typically 11 to 1.

Corner Bet
Bet on four numbers by placing the chip on the corner that intersects the box for the four numbers. A winning bet is usually paid at 8 to 1.

Six Number Bet
This bet is placed on the outside line, between two rows, covering six numbers. The wager is won if the ball lands on any of these six numbers, typically paying 6 to 1.

Outside Bets

Any Odd or Any Even
Bet on whether the ball will land on an odd or an even number. Successful wagers are paid 1 to 1.

Any Red or Any Black
The classic movie bet on a roulette table is "50 dollars on red". You are betting that the ball will land on a red number or a black number. Winning bets are paid 1 to 1.

Low or High
Will the ball land on a number between 1 and 18 or 19 to 36? Winning bets are paid 1 to 1.

Column Bet
This bet is placed at the end of any of the three columns of numbers. If the ball lands on any number within that column, you win. The odds are 2 to 1. This is a long-row version of a row bet above.

First 12, Second 12, Third 12
Bet on whether the ball will land on a number between 1 and 12, 13 and 24, or 25 and 36. Payout is 2 to 1.
