Poker Primer

Unlike most popular casino games in the world which were imported to Las Vegas from around the globe, Poker was actually invented in the United States of America!

The most popular variation of this game is Texas Hold 'Em. And it has never been more popular. With the World Series of Poker now a very popular television event, and the advent of an Internet "wildcard" player winning this event, everyone wants a piece of the action!

A poker hand is 5 cards. In many variations, there are more than 5 cards dealt, but only the 5 cards that together make the best hand count toward the hand (the rest are ignored).

In Texas Hold 'Em, two cards are dealt to each player face down. Following a round of betting there are three shared (or "community") cards shown face up (this is called "The Flop"). Another round of betting is followed by another community card dealt face up ("The Turn" or "4th Street"). Another round of betting is followed by a final community card dealt face up ("The River" or "5th Street"). A final round of betting will occur before remaining players reveal their two face-down cards to determine the winner. It is interesting to note that most Texas Hold 'Em hands never make it past the final round of betting (all the players except one usually fold before this point).

Although there are numerous variations in how cards are dealt, the winning poker hands are fairly universal. Where there are "wild cards" (cards that can be put in place of any other card), the advent of the otherwise impossible "5 of a kind" may pop up somewhere in the mix of best hands. Aside from this, the hand order is as follows (from worst to best):
  • High Card
(the highest single card, i.e. Ace).

  • Pair
(two matching value cards, i.e. 10 of spades and 10 of hearts).

  • Two Pair
(two pairs, i.e. 10 of spades, 10 of hearts, jack of diamonds, jack of hearts).

  • Three of a Kind
(three matching value cards, i.e. 10 of spades, 10 of hearts, and 10 of diamonds)

  • Straight
    (five sequential cards, i.e. 3, 4, 5, 6, 7).

  • Flush
(five cards all of the same suit, i.e. 3, 5, 7, 9 and King of spades).

  • Full House
(three of a kind with a pair, i.e. 10 of spades, 10 of hearts, 10 of diamonds, jack of diamonds, jack of hearts)

  • Four of a Kind
(four cards of the same value, i.e. 10 of spades, 10 of hearts, 10 of diamonds and 10 of clubs).

  • Straight Flush
(five cards of the same suit, and sequential, i.e. 3 to 7 of spades).

  • Royal Flush
(10, Jack, Queen, King, Ace of the same suit).
When comparing hands, the "higher" of the same type of hand wins, i.e. "four of a kind Kings" beats "four of a kind Queens". In cases where the hands are tied, the additional cards may break the tie. For example, if two players have the same two pairs, the person with the higher 5th card will win the hand. If the full 5-card hands are exactly the same, the pot is split between the tied players.
